Executive Director of MFSRDC

The Survey Research Center (SRC) in the Institute for Social Research (ISR) plans to make an open-rank appointment of a new leader of the Michigan Federal Statistical Research Data Center (MFSRDC). The MFSRDC seeks to hire an Executive Director. The MFSRDC is a joint project of the University of Michigan and the Census Bureau to provide qualified researchers access to non-public data. The Executive Director oversees the MFSRDC, and is responsible for day-to-day management of it in cooperation with Census Bureau staff, for interacting with Census Bureau and other statistical agency staff and management in Washington, and for guiding a wide range of internal and external researchers. The Executive Director assists researchers with complicated proposals for access to data and gives guidance to researchers about protocols for using non-public data. The Executive Director is responsible for outreach to the research community to assure wide, responsible and innovate use of the MFSRDC, consistent with its mission of improving federal statistics and encouraging collaboration between the research and federal statistical community. The Executive Director is expected to have research projects in the MCRDC.

The center invites applications from and nominations of outstanding candidates for positions in the Research Scientist ranks. Appointment at the Research Professor ranks is possible, depending on level of experience and qualifications. This position is at least 50%, but may be coordinated with a teaching or research appointment in ISR or in another unit at the University of Michigan, as appropriate.

Requirements for the position include a 1) Ph.D. in economics, demography, statistics, sociology, psychology, or other social science or related field with strong quantitative skills and 2) research experience in economics, demography, quantitative social sciences or another area germane to the data in the MCRDC. The candidate should have the ability to 1) conduct research of high quality, 2) work with minimal supervision, 3) work effectively in leadership and collaborative roles, 4) work effectively with Federal agencies, 5) work effectively with MFSRDC researchers, and 5) administer a major research project. Experience with large-scale datasets is essential. Experience with confidential, non-public, and administrative data is highly desirable. Candidate must be eligible to become a Special Sworn Status employee of the Federal Government soon after starting the position.
