The Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) invites applications for a full-time position of Assistant Research Scientist for the Youth Policy Lab (YPL).
SRC is a unique, world-renowned social science research center that conducts investigator initiated, survey-based research on theoretical and applied problems of social and scientific importance. The University of Michigan Youth Policy Lab partners with community and government agencies to help them make better decisions using data analysis and evaluation. We work in three core areas: (1) Early Starts which includes work in maternal and infant health and early childhood education, (2) Thriving Adolescents, including work on the mental health of middle and high school students, and (3) Transitions to Adulthood, including projects designed to improve how young people prepare for and succeed in early adulthood – from workforce and career training to post-secondary education. We recognize that the wellbeing of youth is intricately linked to the wellbeing of families and communities, so we engage in work that impacts all age ranges. Using rigorous evaluation design and data analysis, we are working closely with our partners to build a future where public investments are based on strong evidence, so all Michiganders have a pathway to prosperity.
SRC seeks to hire an Assistant Research Scientist who will collaborate with the Youth Policy Lab research team on all aspects of the research process. The scientist will, with the assistance of senior faculty, help develop proposals to fund existing projects, provide PhD level leadership to several Lab projects, and help supervise research staff. The Lab is a relatively new research group and as such, the Assistant Research Scientist will work with Lab leadership to help develop protocols that ensure that the Lab is producing the highest quality research. Finally, the Assistant Research Scientist will assist with writing and dissemination activities undertaken by the Lab, including writing policy briefs, peer review publications, presenting results to partnership and other constituents and presenting at research conferences. The Assistant Research Scientist will be a core member of the Lab’s leadership team.
Requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in a social science field, demonstrated experience in the scientific and technical management of research projects, a strong interest in research related to youth and their families, experience with large national data sets, and excellent interpersonal, management, presentation and writing skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong methods background, experience conducting randomized control trials, and prior experience working in an applied research setting.
This would be a 12-month appointment. Salary is highly competitive.
