Job Summary

The Survey Research Center (SRC) ( within the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research is seeking a scientific leader in the area of population-based health and aging to join the leadership team of The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) (

We are interested in appointing a senior social scientist with a proven track-record of scholarly achievement and the ability to thrive in the entrepreneurial, interdisciplinary, and collegial culture of SRC. The ideal candidate is a scientific leader in the field of health and aging as demonstrated by a history of successful NIH grant-writing, a demonstrated focus analyzing large-scale survey data, and a successful record of entrepreneurial activity to support innovative data collection and research. Prior experience managing survey design, fieldwork, web-based collection, or other aspects of data production and dissemination are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will collaborate with PSID’s team of Directors to maintain the study’s strengths and to plan strategically for evolution and innovation in order to remain at the forefront of health and aging research. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide intellectual, administrative, and scholarly leadership as a Co-Principal Investigator and Associate Director of the PSID;
  • Actively lead strategic planning and proposal development to support major research funding in the area of life course health and aging. Areas of particular interest include multi-generational influences on health in middle and later life, genetics, and dementia;
  • Represent the study to the NIH sponsors, and in particular to the National Institute on Aging;
  • Collaborate with the Director Team to develop research funding for the overall project;
  • Effectively collaborate with team members to successfully administer and manage this complex and multi-disciplinary research project;
  • Publish scholarly research in the area of health and aging;
  • Strengthen established ties to the scientific community, including other SRC surveys such as the Health and Retirement Study, to ensure that the study continues to collect cutting-edge data that respond to scientific and policy needs of the social science, health and aging research communities;
  • Further develop outreach and promotional programs for the study.
