Formal features of rating scales and the interpretation of question meaning

Examined studies that move beyond scale polarity and the use of positive vs negative numbers to address the general proposal that formal features of rating scales provide information that respondents use in interpreting the substantive meaning of the question. Study 1 explores the impact of numeric values on respondents' interpretation of vague quantifiers. Study 2 addresses the impact of different graphical layouts of rating scales. Both studies test whether respondents draw on formal features of questionnaire design to infer the intended meaning of the question. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)
